FAQ β€” with demonstrations

Which way do we rotate?

Clockwise. Always. When your team wins the right to serve, everyone moves one spot clockwise.

The player at the front-right (Pos 2) drops to the serving spot (Pos 1). Everyone else follows.

When do we rotate? (the #1 confusion)

You only rotate when you win a rally that the OTHER team served. That's called a "side-out". You earn the serve, so you rotate.

ROTATE They served, you won the point

You just got the ball back. Move clockwise, new server steps to Pos 1.

DON'T rotate You served and won the point

Same server keeps serving. Score goes up, nobody moves.

Simple rule: same server keeps serving until your team loses a rally. You only shuffle positions when the serve comes back to you.

Who serves, and in what order?

The player at Pos 1 (back-right) serves. 🏐

1SERVES

Serving order is the rotation order. Once you've all served and rotated fully, it loops back to the same person. The chips under the court above show whose turn is coming.

Can I move anywhere after the serve?

Yes β€” after the ball is served. But at the moment of the serve you must be standing in your rotation order (not overlapping the neighbour in front/behind or left/right of you).

After serve go anywhere

Setter sprints to the net, hitters spread out, defenders drop back. The position number only matters for the instant the server hits the ball.

For amateurs: just don't be obviously in front of / behind the wrong teammate when the server contacts the ball. After that, run wherever you need to.

Front row vs back row β€” what's the difference?

Front row = Pos 4, 3, 2 (near the net). Back row = Pos 5, 6, 1.

🟑 front (attack+block)   🟒 back

Front row players can jump and spike near the net, and can block.

Back row players cannot block, and can only spike if they jump from behind the attack line (the dashed line, ~3m from net).

As you rotate, you cycle between front and back. So everyone plays both β€” that's why rotation matters.

What's a rotation fault?

Serving out of order, or standing in the wrong rotational spot at the moment of serve. The other team gets a point + the serve.

Fix: trust the serving-order chips above. Whoever the highlighted chip says β€” that's who serves.

How does scoring work?

Rally scoring: every rally is a point, no matter who served. Win the rally β†’ you get a point.

A set is to 25 points, must win by 2 (so 26–24, 27–25, etc.). Matches are usually best of 3 or best of 5 sets. The deciding set is often to 15.

Reminder: scoring a point and rotating are different things. You score on every rally you win, but you only rotate on a side-out (see the "When do we rotate" question).

Quick glossary
Side-out = win serve back from other team Rally = one ball in play, start to finish Set/Setter = 2nd touch + the player who does it Spike/Attack = hard downward hit Block = stop a spike at the net (front row only) Dig = saving a hard hit, low Tip / Dink = soft fake shot, drop it into a gap instead of spiking Attack line = dashed 3m line Ace = serve that scores untouched
